I ask myself the same thing, these days. As a former smoker I can tell you that there are too many reasons to list, but among the top 3 are:
1) some people start smoking at a young age and get addicted early on
2) people like the social aspect of smoking
3) it is so hard to stop once you start

1 of the reasons is because tobacco cos. used to shove it down your throat at every chance during tv viewing, making it seem that its OK, Marlboro man died,things changed. Smoking is on a very short leash, and getting shorter. There was a time when cig ads were plastered all over the landscape as well as beer & liquor ads. Times they are a changin ( present day smoker). And damn it's hard to quit!!!!

Many reasons. Their parents did it. They're stupid. They think it looks cool (which it doesn't). They want to die a horrible death early on in life. The don't care about the people around them breathing in the second hand smoke. I could go on but I think you get the picture.

Peer Pressure. Being easily swayed to do stupid things. Urges to do something that LOOKS relaxing, but is a KILLER!
More people are influenced by Peer Pressure, than their PARENTS, I think. Beware!

I do because now that I have started, I enjoy it and do not want to quit. I gotta die somehow. I'd rather it be my smoking than someone's secondhand smoke to kill me, if that does kill me.
