Yah it can. But winXP will run as a 32 bit OS. SO It will not be able to use the advantages of the processors 64 bit capabilities.Although u will get some preformence upgrade but the best is to use WinXP Pro 64 or Linux 64, to actually get all from the 64 bit processor.

Microsoft did have a trade up program going a while back, where they would trade your 32-bit O.S. for a new 64-bit one. I don't know if they still are doing that or not. Bottom line, you can get Windows XP Pro in 64-bit format now. The new "Vista" to be released later this year will be 64-bit also. The 32-bit program will work just fine on your computer, but will run in a 32-bit format. Don't get too hung up on this, there aren't too many programs out there that will run in 64-bit. All the software manufacturers finally got outran by the hardware people!

Yes. I'm doing so now, and have been since 2003.

Athlon 64bit processors are 'hybrid'; while they run 64 bit instructions most efficiently, they can also run 32bit instructions with no significant loss of performance.
