a postal code is the same thing as a zip code. it defines the address, from a postal code you can find out the provence, town, and depending upon the size of the town it might even be able to tell the street. it is a very quick way to sort letters or packages without haveing to read the full address. all the mail sorters or package handlers have to do is look at the postal code and they know right away where it going to.
for advanced readers, the american zip code is a far better way. as it greatly increases productiveity in the more expesive positions ie, drivers, and delivery people because it is easier to make logical traces through there delivery area.

Postal codes work the same way as zip codes except that every address gets a unique postal code. The first part usually designates a city or region, while the rest designates the specific address. It is used mostly for sorting by Canada Post.
