Introduction to Proxy Servers
Some home networks, corporate intranets, and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) use proxy servers (also known as proxies). Proxy servers act as a "middleman" or broker between the two ends of a client/server network connection. Proxy servers work with Web browsers and servers, or other applications, by supporting underlying network protocols like HTTP.
Key Features of Proxy Servers
Proxy servers provide three main functions:
firewalling and filtering
connection sharing
caching

No. Proxy servers are not illegal. A "proxy" acts for someone else (like a realtor buying a house for a customer). A proxy server acts for another server; one computer doing some work for another computer.
You can use a proxy server for illegal or shady things, but generally they have legitimate purposes.

Nope, proxy servers aren't illegal. If you've heard of dial-up accelerators, you know proxy servers. Basically proxy servers are a server that when you load a web page it compresses the pages you are about to view, so that you can view them faster.
