It sure ain't Ireland 30 million Brits don't know anthing about it and most of the other 30 million don't want to. They detest the French, they hate the Dutch, they depise the Belgians.
As for the Germans even though tens of thousands including most of the Royal Family have German roots thee cant stand each other. The feeling is entirely mutual.
They don't feel close to the Scots or the Welsh and vice-versa. The English are an insular race who love only their own
As they say only a wart hog can love another wart hog. eg Check out the US of A for best proof

Australia, Africa, South Asia, America, Antarctica, ...
Well, besides jokes, they used to own several countries in Europe, but the English people since they were empire with many wars with most nations, they feel closer (like more) the ones furthest from England (Greece!)!
Historically, the Greeks had settlements in Britain for thousands of years until the Romans concorded the island and found there temples dedicated to Hercules and other gods and heroes!
They feel they are closer (genetically) to Germans (the Queen is of German descent), French (too much mixing through the centuries), Scandinavians (the Vikings frequently were settling in Britain and eventually mixing with the locals.

I don't think they feel they are close to any other european country or any other country, England like America is a very proud country (thats why they won't go euro) and like america again, feel they are the best and the greatest at everything. I suppose its not a bad way to be but it explains why for example why so many people rooted against them in the world cup and why so may other countries seem to have a problem with them. (I think its all sad and I don't understand why we can't all get along?)

I was born England, with an Irish mother, Welsh gran, Scots and French ancestry as well, so, take your pick.
There is no such thing as a pure bred Brit, we are Angles, Saxons, Danes, Romans, Celts, Normans... you name it, we have it in our blood somewhere.
I call myself English, because I was born in England and I love my country, but am not naive enough to think any of us is pure bred anything.
To be a British subject, is to be a mongrel. As Winston Churchill said, we are a mongrel race. And I can't see what's wrong with that, since the mongrel is far tougher and more durable, and usually outlives the purebreds anyway!
We are and always have been, a land of immigrants who rubbed along together in harmony. Long before America was born!

I live in the UK, but am a EU national. Having spoken to loads of Brits, I don't believe that they feel closer (or close) to any European country.
I'm sensing (repeat: SENSING) that the British realise that the UK is part of Europe and of the EU only when it's convenient; when things are not, they just focus on themselves, saying "oops sorry, we're British" and they just wash their hands (metaphorically speaking).

Probably Ireland because we are geographically close to them, and have a similar culture. Or it could be Portugal because we have always had historical affinities with them. Portugal is England's oldest ally throughout history.
When I lived in France, I noticed some cultural similarities there too. French people have a similar sense of humour, and similar hopes, fears and aspirations as we do.

No. We are not Mongrels at all. We are English and if you can say we are mixed, so is everyone else nowadays. We are still a people, no matter where we live. But yes, we are an insular people and do not feel close to anyone, really. We are an island race.
