ive heard that it has something to do with white people driving thru black neighborhoods and honking their horns. i dont really think that makes a bit of sense but thats what someone told me once.

I believe it is short for honky tonk...not derogatory at all except for the fact that labels should be avoided.

I don't know, but I can assure you that in 40 years of being African American I have never ONCE heard anyone use that nickname in real life -- just on TV shows. There are others that I have heard, but honkey has never been among them.

I think that was just a TV fabrication that caught on.

Anyway, can't we all just get along?!?

i was born in 64 and growing up in Texas we had honky tonks where u go get drunk, laid, & fight with other drunks. it just stuck

i read once that it referred to white men honking their horns at black prosititutes. Dont know if it is true or not
