how do you hand wash a sweater?

i got a new sweater, and it says to hand wash it...what kind of soap should i use?? how do i wash it in the sink...i'm completely clueless and i'm afraid i'll stretch it...

Buy Woolite liquid. Fill the sink or a wash basin with cold water. Add a capful of Woolite. Submerge the sweater and gently squeeze the soapy water through it. Let is soak for 3 to 5 minutes. Drain the water. Squeeze the sweater (DON'T twist it or wring it.) Fill the sink again with clear water. Squeeze it through the sweater. Keep changing the water until no more soap is coming out. Then squeeze as much water out as possible, lay the sweater flat on a big towel and roll it up, squeezing as you go to get more water out. Then lay it flat and shape it properly and let it dry. It's best if you have a sweater rack (a net-like rack) to lay it on, so air can circulate through it---it will dry faster that way.

Run cold, or lukewarm water in the sink.

Add an extremely mild detergent, or a product intended specifically for sweaters (Woolite). Stir a bit with your hand to disperse the detergent.

Gently press the sweater into the water. Swirl the sweater around, and VERY GENTLY press the water through the sweater.

Drain the sink, and fill with clean water. Rinse. Repeat until no more suds.

VERY GENTLY squeeze the water out of the sweater.

Dry flat, on a towel on a bed, sofa or counter. Turn after several hours for even drying.

Buy some Woolite at the grocery (small white bottle). Fill your sink with cold water, add one capful of Woolite. Put your sweater in, swish it to get it saturated. Let it sit for about 5 mins, then go back and swish it around in there, squeeze the suds thru, and then drain your sink. Fill it back up twice to rinse the sweater (again swish/squeeze the suds out). Take the sweater out, wrap it in a towel, and squeeze gently to get most of the water out. Re-shape it, and lay it flat to dry.

Do not wring/twist your sweater after removing it from the water. Always use the towel to remove the water.

Whenever something says to hand wash, I put the item in a lingerie bag and wash it in the wash machine on delicate. When I remove it, I lay it flat and arrange it to dry.

with my sweaters that say that i put them through the washing machine anyways and then lay them flat to dry. ive never seen any damage done when i do it that way.
