Question for any aquatic snail keepers out there - my Golden Apple snail female has become very sluggish and inactive the past 2 - 3 weeks. She climbs right up on top of the filter head out of the water and closes her shell tight shut, and seems uninterested in eating. Sometimes I find her on the floor of the tank on her side, half hanging out of her shell. She doesn't even move into her shell when I pick her out of the tank.

She does have a fully grown large male Apple Snail in the same tank with her, and they could be mating, though from what I can see she's hardly interested!!

I don't think there's anything much wrong with the water as I have eight other Apple snails and they're all happy, alert and (very) hungry. Though they are quite a bit younger than her - she was the oldest as I bought her as an adult, when the others were tiny babies!

Could this be an inactive stage, or a sort of hibernation? Or is she sick, or possibly just old?

Thanks :o)

Bad Girl....thanks for the comment - you just made me crack up laughing! XD

And I'm no brother, I'm female. And snails, snakes, spiders, frogs...they're all cool to keep! :oP

It sounds to me like she may be getting on in years, my oldest biggest Cana (giant snail) is the same way. He/she does get up and do things, just not as much as the others. I am still relativly new at snail keeping, so check out these sites

Good luck!

possibly old the above, since all the other snails are much younger than her, shes not interested in mating with them, try getting a snail the same age

Normally they head out of the water and lay a cluster of eggs just above the water line. If its a glass aquarium, they may fall out and end up getting injured. If you have a condensation glass plate on top, it will keep them from falling out and give them a place to lay eggs. I found the book lined below very interesting :
