A lot of variables are involved, so the answer isn't straightforward. Like any field, therapists vary by skill level - some are empathetic and good listeners, some are informed by the latest research findings (and stick to them) - others aren't as empathic, skilled, or as connected to the research.
They can have different orientations:
psychodynamic psychologists will attempt to reveal your hidden unconscious conflicts; although this orientation has fallen out of favor due to it's highly subjective nature.
some psychologists will be very directive and will talk alot - but this isn't good form, a psychologist (especially at the beginning) should listen more than anything else - offering insights as they become more familiar with the client.
As far as fees, depends on locations (big cities = more $$$) and training (more education = more $$$).
social workers (masters degree) = $40-$90 an hour
psychologists (phd/psyd) = $100-$180 an hour
psychiatrists (MD; can prescribe meds, but dont do much talk-therapy) = $400-$500/hr

There are various types of therapy. The key is being open with your feelings to give the person a chance to help you. Don't be negative before you even try. It's important to find a therapist that you click with and feel comfortable talking to.
1. Clergy
2. Counselors
3. Social Workers
4. Psychiatrists (can perscribe medicines).
5. Group sessions
Fees vary but check your health insurance to see how many sessions they will pay for and how much. A good therapist will make you work on self.

There is no one answer to this question. There are all different kinds of therapists... psychiatrists, Mental Health counselors, Social workers, psychologists, psychotherapists, etc. They all differ in the type of therapy they provide. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication. They typically only do "medication management" and not actual "talk therapy" Some forms of therapy include CBT, Art therapy, light therapy, ECT, and many others.

It depends on the therapist and you. The first one I went to wanted to sympathize by telling me her problems. The next one at the first visit wanted to tell me what a wonderful person I am - How am I to believe this when she doesn't even know me? The third listened, took notes and never said anything - made me really nervous but he kept saying I had to figure it out on my own and he didn't think I was ready for his analysis. The last one was the best!!! She made me feel like she was a friend (but had more insight), gave me suggestions, reading material, answers to direct questions, and homework. I was amazed how she could remember the people and history without ever writing anything down during the session Prices, techniques and personalities vary. Can you tell I was desperate for help by the number of times I tried? lol

Well, it's your best judgement to figure out if they really listen or not. But at that time who really cares. It's an unconditional session that someone does give you a real answer, but that is really there. There job is to allow to or guide you in a direction that only you can resolve, and or, fix. what ever the phase you are in. Good Luck

you sit. and they make you talk. and then they ask "so how does that make you feel" every five seconds. And they get paid something ridiculous like 3 dollars a minute just to sit there while you vent. Just have your friend help you, itll work the same.

The cost could be as little as free, and help as much. Oh, and it's boring. (They don't really listen, it's an illusion. They just repeat the last thing you say, or they " uh-hum".)
