Manson preyed on people with low self esteem and people who easy targets. Combine that with drugs and a sense of security and you have followers. Not only that, he treated everyone like they were a huge family...some people with no where to go or feel like outcasts from their own found this comforting.
I agree that Helter Skelter is a good read. There are some documentaries about him as well.

I don't know. Probably from those people who loll out their tongues, cough twice in a phony fashion and say see you later a lot in an affected manner. Now if we could just put 'em all in the same cell.

I heard his eyes played a big part on getting people to follow his orders. I know that sounds kinda science fictional but it was talked a lot about on the TV Biography about him.
