If you want a ferret, DO RESEARCH! I have 4(my roomie & I do small animal rescue); they take a lot of time & training. Vet bills, food & other things they need can become expensive. For the right person they make good pets. Do the research; if you still want one -go for it.

They are only illegal in California and Hawaii, but some areas have certain restrictions on their own, like DC. You need to find out.
They are kind of hard to come by in my area too right now, Southwestern Indiana. I asked why and here's what they told me.
They used to all get their ferrets from Marshall Farms, the largest "producer" of pet ferrets around. Marshall Farms has been the center of quite some controversy as far as their breeding habits and transport rules are concerned(breeding females too young and too often and then discarding them, shipping young kits before they should be seperated from their mothers, shipping in bad weather without added protection, nasty living conditions, aso aso, true or false? You be the judge) And Marshall also "produces" animals they sell to labs for experiments, Beagles for instance.
Anyhow, Marshall's quality has been going downhill fast recently. Ferrets are getting sick with respiratory diseases more and just wouldn't thrive. I'm not sure why exactly, but one can only imagine. A lot of the stores here have switched breeders, but they are having a hard time matching Marshall's output. I've also heard that the non-Marshall's were meaner and bit more. Two of my favorite pet stores are looking around for yet another new breeder to supply them. Until then they just won't keep them.
Where do you live?
Do your homework before getting one, we don't need another shelter ferret sitting and waiting for a forever home until the last day of it's life. Read FERRETS FOR DUMMIES, inform yourself.
And then adopt one from a shelter. Look up petfinder.com. Lots of ferrets there. I got two of them through that site.
Check this site out and try to keep a dry eye if you can. See what happens when people think they have to have a ferret?
The people in the pictures are miracle workers to me.

The naked ones have adrenal disease, a lot of the other ones were just simply dumped or mistreated.

Ferrets from puppy shops are fantastic. you should actually get 2. in case you could not have adequate money 2, you should attend. there is a great number of rate and time fascinated about possessing ferrets. you won't be able to get away with a small low value cage as ferrets want area to thrive. also, ferret nutrients and clutter is very extreme priced and they use a great number of it. The cage desires to be wiped clean each day and they are going to nonetheless scent. in case you've not owned any earlier i advise going to the library and a minimum of spot analyzing "ferrets for dummies". it may help out plenty.

Get on-line at e-bay and put in ferret. Never mind I think those are stuffed.
No you probally will have to buy from an individual. If you are in a big city more than likely you will find one. Small places might be harder.
Have you asked pet shops if they can help get you one or how to get one?
Good luck

If your pet store doesn't have one, check the newspaper. Speaking from experience though... ferrets are a lot to keep up with. They stink... they poop a lot... they bite... and they steal your stuff. When we rearranged our bedroom, you cannot imagine the amount of objects I found behind our dresser! :-) Good luck whatever you decide!
