a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar works wonders.

also, it depends on how old the child is, but one of the BEST remedies... organic onions, organic garlic (both finely chopped) and cayenne pepper. swallow a spoonful straight and rinse it down with water... bad breath.. but GREAT for coughs and congestion.

also, if there is congestion involved with the cough, consider steam treatments.. possibly with some sort of menthol or peppermint extract added to the water... careful not to use too much though...

Pertussis aka Whooping Cough is going around alot, I would suggest you ask to be tested it is a quick swab and than they give you antoibotics if you have it or as a precaution and after 5 days of treatment you are no longer considered contagious, Pertussis is very contagious and can be deadly to infants please get it checked out.
The Cdc also reccomends all adolscents and adults receive a Pertussis booster vaccine as well so I reccomend that for everyone.

Well you could use a hot totty, whiskey with lemon and honey, just a lil bit, not enough to get the kid drunk or anything. also putting honey and lemon in chamomille tea works well.
