I'm looking for work, so one thing I've been doing is networking. If your friend gave you a lead/contact for a job that didn't quite sound like what you were looking for, do you still get in touch with that lead/contact? And if so, do you try to network from that person, a person you don't even know, without jeopordizing your friendship with your friend? i.e., since you have a lead/contact but it doesn't sound like it will work out, what can you do with it? Or do you not do anything further with it?

I agree with treeof_knowledge. Don't waste your time if it is not going to open a path you want to go down. There is a difference between taking a calculated risk versus doing something because there is a chance it may work in your favor.

And remember, professional networking is a two-way street. I've assisted a handful of folks by opening doors, but it's important that my creditability is not damaged by not-so-bright moves.

I have a home based business opportunity for you if you are still looking for work. But to answer your question, yes, you do still get in touch with that person and try to network with that person. A lot of people who are in the networking field feed off each other. I have an opportunity for you, and if it is not for you, then I can ask you for names of people you may think might like this opportunity. You in turn, find a job later, you can call me up and say, hey I just got this opportunity I want to share with you. If I am not interested, maybe I can give a name to you. It is all with who you know in the networking field and it is good to keep contacts. If right at this time my company was not right for you, but 6 months from now, you see we are sky rocketing, just like I told you we would, you can call and tell me you are interested and get a piece of the pie. I am telling, keep all networking/contact/leads close. My company tells you to call people back in 6 months to see if they are ready.

Do nothing with it. Why fake it if it sounds like it will not lead you down the road you want o go. That will just open a can of worms.

Also, you might volunteer in the industry you want to work in.
That gives you higher visablility and allows people to see your work ethic with no risk to themselves and when something comes up; you will be first to know.
