First you need to know where the person died. If it was a relatively recent death, your quickest bet is to look through local papers. A lot of major newspapers have this information archived online, so it can be as easy as a quick search. If the death occurred a long time ago, start with the CDC (link below). You will still need to know which state the death occurred in. This sort of information and the way it is given out is regulated by each state, but this is the best place to start.

Someone famous? Just google their name, or go to wikipedia and type the name there. Average Joe? The town keeps records at the Municipal building.

You can go to the county in which they died and research the death certificate on file. Or you can inquire at the state's office of vital statistics. Or if you know their social security number you can research the social security death index.

Look at the obituaries online for the city they lived in. The newspaper will have an obituary online that you can search. Type in the name. Good luck.

I guess their tombstone would be a good place to start.....unless you dont know where theyare buried......then maybe you could try the city births deaths and marriages office...
