To start this all out, the Rolling Stones got the name from a Muddy Water's song, Rollin' Stone.

The Muddy Waters answer is correct, but don't forget that Hank Williams sang "I'm a rollin stone/on the road too lost/for this life of sin/I have paid the cost." It seems to be a theme in American popular music.
