Right now I have a ceiling fan in my apartment, but it just started humming when it's on high, so I need to either replace it or fix it. I'm assuming it's going to cost a lot to do that. I also rent my apartment, so I don't want to put too much money into something I don't even own. Should I just get a regular fan? Do they work just as well to keep me cool in the summer?

First of all, you living in an apartment, there should be maintenence on site. Check into that and put a work order in for your ceiling fan. You being the tenant are, by law, not required to fix anything that was originally in your apartment upon you moving in. Second, yes floor or window fans work just as well for in the summer. It is your choice if you choose to purchase another fan to stand on the floor or sit in your window. However, heed this warning, if you have or are around small children and they come into your apartment, remove your fan, as they can pull it down onto themselves and be severely hurt. Just use caution, please, for your safety as well as others. Also if you have pets, keep an eye on your cord, as they like to chew on them, cats and dogs, you don't need an accidental fire being started because of animals chewing on the cord. Other than those warnings, any fan will work for you, but do put in a work order to the maintenence.

If you are renting maybe the owner will get you a new one. If not a ceiling fan only cost like $30.00 at wal-mart. I personally would use a ceiling fan instead of having the others sit all around the house and by the time you buy about 2 of them you could pay for a nice ceiling fan.

First check with your landlord and your lease agreement. Maybe they will pay for the ceiling fan. (If necessary offer to do the install if they pay for the fan.)

Next if you replace the fan at your cost, keep the old one an put it back up and take your new one with you when you leave.

Back to your question. Do you have the floor space for a conventional fan? There are "tower" fans that don't take up much space. Go to Home Depot. They have a good choice of fans. I just bought a $32 tower fan with three speeds. Its quiet and it moves a large amount of air..

I would buy a portable fan so you can take it with you when you move.
