We don't have a royal family to admire here, so we choose the next best thing (if you could call either good) and that is celebrities. There are plenty of self made people.

ya know - why they do it i don't know. i personally could care less because all those babbies are so spoilt they are ignorant liberals. i think people that become involved on that level really need to focus more on their own life and what it's lacking rather than attempting to live vicraiously thru someone elses. these are the people that slow down on the freeway to look at accidents. these are the people that go out drinking and shootin off their mouth then wonder why they have a balck eye in the morning.
and yeah all the popularized careers have been nothing but nepotism for a long time now. i'm sorry but tori spelling , paris hilton, and all these loser nobodies leaching off daddy's tit can go to hell

The media plays a very important role. When celebrities are in the news more than real issues - what does it say about what the media is trying to do? Distraction, distraction, distraction ---- from the real issues. It's easier and less mind-boggling to pay attention to shallow if entertaining news about some talent-less celebrity than to pay attention and get concerned about vital political issues.
People that idolize celebrities are imitators rather than innovators.

Why does the rest of the world idolize dictators and terrorists ? I'd say actors and musicians are a whole lot safer, mate.

We don't idolize them (as least I don't). But for some reason, many people find it fascinating to buy magazines to read about who they're having sex with. I can't explain that one, but I don't that is idolizing them either. It's just nosiness and living vicariously due to lack of excitement in one's own life.

people idolize famous people in general, self made or connected, and yes there are self made people making it big. my cousin isn't connected and is starring in a movie "return to marshall" w/ matt mccaunahey(sp?).

They don't idolize them as much as they envy them - and that's a big difference.

It is the way the industry works, so they can get more money to their pockets.
