it's funny you asked that .... this is what (all) I know:
I was watching Will & Grace and flipped to a channel that had figure skating. I was put into some kind of trance it was like I couldnt look away or even blink my eyes started to water it was crazy....but it's beautiful and kind of peaceful to watch they make it look so easy.

I know just a few things about figure skating:
- A triple sow cow is not a horribly freakish genetic experiment gone wrong;
- They train these teenagers into the ground so they can have one or two shots at the Olympics. After that, they face a future of skating alongside Barney and the Teletubbies;
- They are greedy about ice time, bumping little league hockey practices off the schedule (at least that's what I remember when I played) :P

yes i figure skate
and yes, we do start from very early ages... i started at 6, and that is counted as late! but also, i really didn't take skating seriously until i was probably 9 or 10...
during the year, you have a coach AND a choreographer (really only pros have one. i dont...) and those two work together on your technique and a program. (high lvls have a short program and long program) you work on it all year and compete with it all year. then next year, make a new one!
I could list the levels of skating... (Oh, these are USFSA, united states figure skating association, lvls) (There also is ISI lvls, the ice skating institute, but thats really for recreation)
the lowest lvl is Non-Test, then Pre-Preliminary, Preliminary, Pre-Juvenile, Juvenile, Intermediate, Novice, Junior, then Senior. Famous skaters like Michelle Kwan, Johnny Weir and Kimmie Messiner are Senior lvl skaters.

Figure Skating is a sport that you need to dedicate your time to be really good. There are many different jumps.. Waltz jump,sow cow,toe loop,loop,flip,Lutz..And then doubles and triples of all those. Spins...2 foot,1 foot, change foot, scratch,back scratch,sit spin,camel,flying camel,death drop,lay back,scorpion.. There is also other many things you can learn..A coach will help if you want to learn.. But you can always skate for fun..There is nothing wrong with that..Also to be an ice skater you need to be in shape..You can work on abs and legs. You need legs to jump and spin. Abs you need so when you jump and you are in the air your body will fall forward if you have weak abs. But yea so if you have any more questions about it just ask. Oh and you do not need to start young to be good. You can pick it up. But it just takes a lot of work!! Good luck.

i know that my friend is on junior level this year and she placed fourth at nationals last year in novice level! im so excited for her watch out for Michaelee Scarincio!!!!!!!!
well Dave at our local rink we almost had no ice time cause the hockey team couldnt win a game and nobody wanted to buy them but thankfully the owners of the rink remembered theres an olympic hopefull training there so they decided to keep ice but she can only skate there 2 times a week because of the little kids hockey team took up all the other ice and in skating the people who skate actually like it cause guess what they dont get paid until they turn professional so they actually love the sport

I know just about everything there is. I've been skating since I was 3.
I think figure skating is like watching swans glide around a frozen lake. It is, litterally, dancing on ice. It requires poise,grace,sophistication,balance,control, and, most of all, determination. When you fall down, you gotta get up, and train twice as hard!

It appears to be a very demanding sport taking long hours of practice with only few managing to get to the national or world level. Jumps are very important now as compared to a few years ago when it was more about style. The men are landing quads nows, but some of the women still seem to struggle with the triples.

That I'd love to do it. But truthfully all figure skaters
usually are trained at very young ages! They are skating
at 3 and 4! It takes a lot of work and you have to have muscular legs!
