It sounds like you have an ingrown toenail and the only cure for that is to have it removed. I don't know what color it is, but if it has gotten thick and yellow, then you probably also have a fungus infection in the nail. If the nail is gray and the toe around it is bright honking red, then there is a chance that you have a staph infection. Either way, a trip to the doctor is in order, unless you can pull it out yourself and have access to antibiotics. Good luck.

ingrown toenails usually develpoe when an improperly trimmed toe nail cuts into the skin @ the edge of the nail or when you wear shoes that are too tight. Because the cut can easily become infected prompt care is needed. So if that is the case you can soak your foot in warm water for 15 min. to soften the skin around the nail. To keep the nail from cutting the skin, wedge a small piece of wet cotton under the corner of the nail to cushion it & lift it slightly. Repeat daily until the nail has growen out and can be trimd. Daily foot soaks in warm water will help relieve swelling or tenderness while toenails grow out. But you should go to doctors 1st to make sure that that is what is wrong.

Have it removed... I had both of my toenails on my big toes removed after years of pain, and it was the best thing I ever did... you will have about one week of bleeding and constant bandage changing but after that it will be nothing but sweet relief...

It is a procedure that can be performed in a foot doctors office... no hospital crap...
