The sun is a medium sized star. There are different types of stars like red dwarfs and others that have a white spectrum of light. But to tell the difference there's so much distance between things in the universe outside of our planet that it's like one grain of sand is several beaches away from the nearest other grain of sand, and since our star is closer it looks bigger. We call it the sun because we rotate around it due to its huge gravity, it's millions of times as big as Earth, and because it's closest to us.

I'm surprized people use the term galaxy so loosely, we are part of a galaxy of millions of stars, each of them has some chance of having planets or other interstellar matter orbiting them. But they are so far away that it takes a huge telescope to see their systems well enough to tell if they have planets, even if the planets are bigger than Earth.

Our sun is a star, actually a type of star called a "yellow dwarf." It just looks very different from the other stars we see because it is so close to the earth and all of the stars we see in the night sky are very far away. Stars vary on color, luminosity, size and other aspects. While the color of our sun is yellow, stars may also be classified as white, blue, orange and red. Only that our sun is closer to us. Our sun is a star, and from the next galaxy over, looks just the same.

Most answers are correct, the only difference is: Size, Temperature, Composition, and Localization in reference to a given point. Both, sun and the star pertain to the same classification.
