Let's all thank celebs like Jessica Simpson for that. Beauty on the surface excuses all idiocy apparently.

**the use OF basic grammar...** (typing error correction)
See what I mean, this decline is effecting the intelligence and capabilities of others. lol
Oh, and I am far from jealous of Jessica Simpson--the soon-to-be former wife of Nick Lachey or Ms. "is this chicken or fish what i'm eating?"

When I grew up in the mountains of Tennessee, my friends and I took great pride in grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary and spelling. Our personal correspondence was flawless ; our penmanship was an art. We approached a Spelling Bee as competitively as if it were the Grand Masters.
I moved away from the USA two years ago to another English-speaking country. I have learned how little I actually know. American English is much different than English spoken in other countries. My impeccable language skills are worth very little outside the USA. There are many cultures in the world, many countries ; schoolchildren worldwide are learning English, but it is a second language.
The lesson I have learned from this is : flawless American English is a dying art which has been replaced with global communications. We live on a small planet, and it might be better to take pride in worldwide social issues than one country's language skills.
Finally, who is Jessica Simpson ?

I'm not sure frightened is the word to describe it. Disgusting and/or discouraging is more apt. Especially considering that a lot of the young people who use poor grammer, and arcane slang and profanity, know better. I know beyond doubt that my kids are capable of good grammer and that they know inigmatic slang only confuses communication, and that they have sufficient vocabularies to express themselves without profanity. Unfortunately, that aint not enough to keep them from talkin' like the rest of the crowd. what's happening seems to be a fashion that will not be corrected until a generation comes along and deems it "uncool."

PS I know a number of teachers who not only use poor grammer, they honestly don't know any better.

YES! I'm so glad other people have noticed this trend. Many English teachers must just be giving passing grades to anyone who shows up for class! There is so little discipline in schools nowadays that it's a fulltime job for teachers just to keep the kids from killing each other, let alone have time to actually teach them anything!

I'm scared too. After I've used the internet a long time, I find myself writing i-slang on things like my term paper, which isn't good either for me or my poor teacher's hurting brain (!)

I know!
Also, the word "like" ruined the English Language because everyone says "like" after each word.

Good, I thought I was the only one who was thinking about that! It's getting out of control. Do you think they talk like they write?
