I would recommend seeing a chiropractor. Chiropractors specialize in the structure of the spine and its relationship to the Central Nervous System (brain, spinal cord, and nerves). You see, when vertebrae are misaligned (what chiropractic calls a subluxation), they can pinch/damage the nerves running out between them and cause pain, numbness/tingling, or any other type of general malfunction to that nerve's corresponding body part. Chiropractors adjust the vertebrae to remove this neural interference and restore the integrity of the CNS.
I'm glad you realize that medications only mask the symptoms (i.e. pain) but do nothing to correct the problem causing the back pain. You should take the time to find a good chiropractor. Ask family and friends for recommendations, visit a few offices and choose the doctor that you are most comfortable with.
For immediate relief you can try putting ice on your back for 20 minutes, as this can numb the nerves and inhibit the pain signals in your back. No matter what you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck!

Try another doctor, look for one with OD after their name, as they tend to be trained slightly more in the orthopedic side of medicine. Ask about getting an MRI. A lot more will show up on an MRI than on an x-ray.
If you take in a lot of caffiene, STOP! It can deteriorate the lining of your joints. Read the ingredients of your pain medicine. Many containe caffiene.
Wear a brace when doing any lifting and pay attention to how you lift. Lift with your knees and not your back. When turning while you're carrying something, turn with your whole body, don't twist your back.
Visit a Chiropractor. I go to mine once every 2 weeks. It helps a lot. Ask around. All chiropractors are not created equal. Some are good, but many are not. People who go regularly know who works for them. Some people need someone more gentle, others need someone a bit rougher. If you go once or twice and feel better don't quit going! Regular manitenace is important.
Though I've never tired it, a lot of people that I know who have back problems swear by accupressure and accupuncture for pain release.
Pay attention to where else in your body you feel pain or numbness. If it runs down your leg along with your back you could have siatica (sp?), If your fingers are numb some of the time, your problem is likely higher in your back, If you have headaches with your back pain, it's probably in your neck. Other health problems can point to the back as well. Inconsistent bowel movements (diahhereia or constipation) can be caused by lower back problems

You know I had something sortof like that awhile back. I even went through physical therapy for it. With a series of back stretches and breathing techniques, the pain eventually went away. It took some time, but it went. Try typing in 'back stretches' in Google, this will give you a list of different stretches to do prior to calling it a day, even some you can do with your son.(since he is the one who is probably causing your pain, lol) Good luck.

You could try a different bed, or maybe rub some kind of a muscle relaxer on it (easier than medicine)
