The sun is expected to become a red giant when it runs out of hydrogen in its core. The diamater of the red giant will be such that earth will be enveloped and destroyed. This is estimated to happen in approximately 5 billion years and we can't do anything to change it.

The way we are heading we will manage to destroy life on our planet, including of course ourselves, long before that.

If you don't want mankind to become extinct in any depth of time, colonisation of another solar system would be the only option since our planet is going to be destoyed in 5 billion years.

People can't slow down when the world ends by much, but the human population is getting large, creating lots of overpopulation problems, but there is no really good fix for any of our world's major problems.

The human species will undoubtedly be extinct long before this world ends in several billion years when the sun expands and consumes all the inner planets.
