Hi, my name is Hank. Unless you shot the cow in the eye or the ear, softest membranes for penetration of the pellet, don't worry about it. It sounds like someone is using their, scare the kid routine, to keep you from torturing the poor cow.
Actually, their hide is too thick for a pump gun pellet to do more than leave a welt. I think what the person was trying to say was don't shoot cows. The person did you a disservice by trying to correct your behavior this way.
They should have said it is wrong to shoot any thing other than a lawful game animal, and that it is morally repugnant to do so.

You certainly should not have been shooting at anybody's cows, but I don't think the pellets will kill them. As someone said, if any of the pellets penetrated the hide, they could get an infection but they most likely didn't even penetrate. Cows hide's are pretty tough. HOWEVER....Cows can get something that farmers call "hardware disease" from ingesting metal bits that they pick up grazing. The metal stays in their bodies and eventually can kill them or make them sick. If you were shooting at them out in their pasture and some of the pellets got in the grass they COULD pick them up and ingest them and over time could cause problems. I don't know if the pellets alone would be enough to cause hardware disease, but I'm sure they aren't good for them to eat, either. Just stay away from all animals from now on. If you can't be nice to them you don't deserve to be around them.

OK do you like to be shot with a pellet gun? Do you think the cows like to be shot? Would you like to go to jail for animal abuse? How old are you 3yr ?because you seem like it because no on In there right mind would just go shooting at an animal that did not hurt them. If is was a BIG mean Bear that was trying to eat you I might under stand But come on man this is a Cow. so I hope you never do this kinda STUPID thing again because I'm sure the owner would not like you shooting at his cows because each one of his cows is worth allot of money.

Lead is toxic, so depending on where it went, sure, it could cause damage. Not sure what it would take to kill a cow though.

No, it can't kill it!!! It stays under the skin, it does not usually penetrate.
