There'll never be a movie, as long as J.D. Salinger has something to say about it. He's not a big film buff:
“You take somebody that cries their goddam eyes out over phoney stuff in the movies, and nine times out of ten they're mean bastards at heart.”
It “depresses hell” out of Holden when people make too much of going to a movie, especially when they form lines all the way down the block.
Over the years, Salinger has adamantly refused to see the film rights to the book, and I'm sure that as long as his copyright lasts, the literary executors will follow his wishes.

It's my fave too! I don't think a movie should ever be made, no one on Earth could play Holden w/ complexity. I totally agree w/ you. But don't think a movie will ever be made, it would just ruin everyones ideas about the book especially if made poorly.

your not going to get rights till he dies, and then I still highly doubt it. It would be an insult to Salinger's memory, anyway, by the time he dies, to make a hollywood movie about The Catcher in the Rye

Once upon a time, I'd have said Leonardo DiCaprio, but I guess he's too old now...
