Just get a laptop that would have the system requirements to run the Windows Vista. That's what I'm going to do. I'll get a laptop than I'll get the Vista when it comes out. here is an estimate of what you need:
A Windows Vista Capable PC includes at least:
A modern processor (at least 800MHz1).
512 MB of system memory.
A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable.
Windows Vista Premium Ready PCs
To get an even better Windows Vista experience, including the Windows Aero user experience, ask for a Windows Vista Capable PC that is designated Premium Ready, or choose a PC that meets or exceeds the Premium Ready requirements described below. Features available in specific premium editions of Windows Vista, such as the ability to watch and record live TV, may require additional hardware.
A Windows Vista Premium Ready PC includes at least:
1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor1.
1 GB of system memory.
A graphics processor that runs Windows Aero2.
128 MB of graphics memory.
40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space.
DVD-ROM Drive3.
Audio output capability.
Internet access capability.

If you are planning to use Vista, you can buy a laptop without it but with the sticker that says :"Windows Vista Capable".
The only thing you have to have in mind is that Vista requieres a lot of capacity in video processing, it means if you buy now the laptop without the Vista, be sure it as a good amount in RAM and a very good video card.

I would figure out what you want to use the laptop for and what your budget might be and purchase when you need to buy. The OS is not an issue, but the important thing is figuring out your computing needs. Battery life, size, budget, DVD or RW, music, word processing, web browsing, etc. If you only do wp and browse the web then a refurbished laptop with Win 98 for $200 might be fine. If you are a gamer then you will need lots of RAM, a graphics chip and a speedy CPU. If you are a road warrier vs. a very infrequent computer user then your needs will differ.

I don't recommend getting any new Microsoft product within at least the first six months of it coming out. At least wait until the first service pack fixes the bugs they left in the OS because they rushed it out to meet a deadline.
So get a lap top now if you anticipate needing it in the next 12 - 18 months.

The minute you buy a laptop/computer there is another bigger and better one out there. If you really need it now then buy it. If you don't need it for a while then wait.
