How about an engraved business card holder or a one-month membership in one of those coffee of the month clubs?

Yes I would agree with the others, just get a card. You don't know him well enough to get something he can actually use or something he needs, so don't bother. Plus this may make him uncomfortable. After all let's not forget if that many people want to hire you than I'm sure you made his life easier for the time that you worked there. He should thank you it's impossible to find good workers these days, and after seeing millions of temps come and go I'd say it's even harder to find a good temp!

Good gifts for guys:
Tickets to a sporting event or concert
Bookends or desk sets
A special engraved Name Plate for his desk
A nice plant in plain pottery
A DVD or CD
Perpetual calendar
Gift certificate at a department store (No more than $25)
Don't get too personal--it's not professional. Don't buy clothing, don't send mushy cards or overly-emotional sentiments. Dont' get food or candy. Don't buy artwork, ties, or "cutesy" little statues for his desk. Don't buy something too expensive.
And guys like getting flowers too! Just not "romantic" ones like roses.

I had a similar boss in my past, when the time came (he actually left the company) I went to Things Remembered and got him a nice desk set engraved with his name on it. (Had pen and pencil holders, a small clock in the middle) They have some very nice, professional type gifts at that store. Or you may try going to a store called Successories if you can find one. They have some nice gifts there.

Yes, definitely a card. You don't want to go overboard with an extravagant gift. A card says it all!! If you get him something too fancy, you may cross that boss/employee boundary, and that can become really messy, trust me!!

Something nice for in his office- maybe something personalized- a pen set or something, but nothing of a "personal" nature- like his favorite movie, clothing, etc- or it can be misinterpreted as more than just a respectful thank you.

A thank you card is the most appropriate gesture. Anything else smells like a come-on.

Unless he is also a personal friend, just a thank you card/note is most appropriate.

It is more professional if you send a card. But if he was really cool buy him something nice, something he is interested in.
