They could be assassins, but more often they were used as spies. I'm not sure that they really 'clashed with samurai' that often, I think more often than not it was either a solitary ninja or a small group getting in, getting what they had been hired to get, and getting out, preferably without being seen. The samurai would have a duty to try and stop them, but I don't see the kind of huge samurai/ninja battles they have in movies taking place.

The Ninja quite often were used to kill oppressive Samurai. The poor village people could not afford the expensive armor and weaponry the Samurai had access to, so they developed a new martial art of camouflage and subterfuge.

Yes, but the ancient art of Ninjitsu is no longer taught openly. If you wish to learn Ninjitsu, you must search extremely hard to find a Ninjitsu master. They were hired as assassins by very wealthy members of the Chinese and Japanese society.

Yes they were real. No they weren't any good. I read somewhere that there is no proof any ninja ever killed anyone on missions. I wish I could find that...

nijas were like ppl in martial arts, except there identity was kept secret, but some were good, and others were crooks and bad guys- simple in a way!

They were real. Not all were good. Many of them were used for subersive missions and such.
