why do YOU, yes YOU, do it?

I was actually planning to answer this question on behalf of the people who do that sort of thing, but since you specified the "You, yes YOU" part, I'll answer on my own behalf.

I don't do that. On the contrary, I'm striving hard to become famous so that I can hide behind my own celebrity and use that as an excuse for why I'm so rude and aloof, and why I think I'm better than everyone else. I don't think I should have to lower myself by talking to losers or remembering who other people are, but expect other people to remember me by sight and desire to be with me. I'm someday hoping that people will use my life to live vicariously, so that they can feel better about themselves by focusing their interests on my life instead of on their own pathetic little lives. And while I wouldn't blame them for that, I would certainly strive to deny them the pleasure; thus enhancing the celebrity experience for both them and myself.

Needless to say, I am not afraid to be myself. I'm an original. Now, all I have to do is become famous. And for me, that's the easy part.
