Why were the nations so reluctant to grant political freedoms to their peoples?

the harsh truth is if the world is granted all variations of 'freedom' it would be an even bigger mess . Fat Settles In The Middle .
those at the top can at times be overworked and underpaid. think about it

i personnally believe that the so called dictators in the present or past have more pertinent questions in their heads that needs attention rather than working on stopping the people in their respective countries from gaining their political freedoms. a form of social control isn't amounting to wrestling away your important rights. in third world countries especially, society cannot afford to be catered to the fancies of the ( albeit thinking ) minority. it has bigger riskier global power plays to consider plus the history baggage of each nation carry with itself it's own untreated wounds. remember the 200 + years of brutal western colonialism and slavery? so yes oouchh.

many examples throughout history have proven that those percieved by the masses to be dictatorian draculas are truly far more humane and sopisticated in reality.

do we as normal citizens the forces at work and how to galvanize it for human freedom and equality?

Think about this... maybe you should change the WERE to ARE! this stuff hasn't stopped... just look at African nations.
but you asked WHY?
because throughout history, white european men have ruled the world, and have thought that their way was the best and only way.. be it religion, political system, social class standings, economy... Etc.. everything was set up by white landowning european men who were too pigheaded to think anyother way but their own. Take for example the Puritans, came from England to escape religious persecution.. only to then persecute the "Salem Witches" for being different.....

Because the more freedom you give to someone the more Power and Say those people will have therefore you can`t control what they do.

without political dissent dictators and totalitarian governments can retain power. power is most easily maintained through control.with political freedoms, opposition would be able to organize and speak out, protest, and eventually try to depose the oppressive government/regime.
