Crazy Man, Crazy" (1953) by Bill Haley and his Comets was the first rock and roll record on the Billboard Magazine chart. Not a cover, but an original. Haley said he heard the phrase at high-school dances his band was playing.

Jackie Breretson (not sure of the spelling - that doesn't look right) and "Rocket 88" came out around 1950. The term "rock and roll" though had been used in blues songs as far back as the 1920's and it had a sexual connotation. You can figure it out.

I can't quite answer this, but the history is interesting. Alan Freed introduced rock-n-roll on the airwaves with bands like the Chesterfields.
