"naer" should be "neer", or technically, ne'er, a poetic contraction of "never". "Never do well son" is a parent's male child who never amounted to much.

Gee...it looks like everyone so far has the right answer. It's ne'er-do-well which means that the person will never accomplish anything good in life.

It refers to someone who "never does well", as in a loser/slacker/mooch. Definitely not a positive thing!
