For the answer to this question we have to roll the clock back to the year 1066 and the Norman conquest of England.

The ruling French were only concerned about EATING food, while the subjugated Anglo-Saxons were busy RAISING it.

A relic of that fact survives in English today. The word for an animal that is to be eaten is often of French derivation, while the living animal is known by an Anglo-Saxon term, thus: pork/pig, beef/cow, poultry/chicken (or other birds).
