The way it feels lately....I thought this WAS the $#% SUN!!!!!

Well, the solar system is a complex place. The alignment of the planets can change over time. But for sure the sun is going to increase its luminescence. So even if earth stays where it is, it will get hotter in a few hundred million years. So, to prevent real global warming, some astrophysicists have come up with a great plan to move the earth out. Yes, read it and weep Al Gore! A real solution!

Technically it does. In the Northern Hemisphere when it is Winter the Earth is closer to the Sun and in the Southern Hemisphere when it is Winter the Earth is closer to the Sun.

the earth's orbit is an ellipse.... a circle stretched out long.

not a perfect circle.

at some points of the year it's closer to the sun, and other points it's further away.

I thought I read somewhere that the sun is expanding so if that is true, then we are getting closer to the sun.

Yeah, I heard that it is getting a bit closer. Orbits mostly maintain themselves though. It could be Billions of years before it goes into the Sun. Maybe we will get off the plannet by then. I hope so.

Actually, it's getting farther until sometime in mid July when it hits apogee-- it's farthest point from the sun in its orbit. Then, it gets closer until January. Yes-- for the northern hemisphere the we are FARTHER from the sun in the summer.

i dont really think the earth is gettin closer to the sun, it is really do to the earth atmosphere. See, we humans drive cars, and as we drive cars they let out carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide collects in the earths atmosphere which traps heat like the greenhouse effect. Thats why auto makers are tryin to find better solutions to driving cars such as hybrids.
