How come we are suppose to place our hand on the Bible and raise our other hand and promise to tell the truth, BUT, GOD isn't allowed in court. That right there should be an out to lie, or to purger yourself. As for the marriage ceremony, it's just for show, just like the liscense is just a piece of paper, for legal purposes. It's not false.

My son had this question as he is an agnostic. If I remember right he did not swear on a bible, just said to tell the truth and nothing but. In case of a marriage, there are thousands of people who just have civil ceremonies. For me it is just a question if you yourself and your partner feel there is a promise there that is all that matters. But then again that is my belief and it worked for 37 years for us.

In all oathswearings, you have the option of AFFIRMING and you do not have to make any reference to God.
This is a throwback to old English practices of swearing.
Marriage, by the way, is a civil affair as much as a religious one. After all, churches don't issue marriage licenses; governments do.

I would say that you have nothing to worry about, you have never entered into any agreement on your belief.
Don't let the false belief that Marriage is a religious act, which I have never read of a christian wedding in the bible, be a reason to shun it, celebrate your love to the person you love for your benefit, not others

They don't swear on a Bible or to God anymore. And marriage isn't exclusive to Christianity or religion. (just ask an atheist)

In these cases you are bound by the law of the land, and not a spiritual law.

You may not agree with some of laws but you'll still get arrested if you break them.
