They did and still always rock...but I do agree their music is not as good as it once was...my theory is they are just trying to sound like today's lame rock so they can sell their music to today's younger generation.

What they were will never be matched--they are icons of a different era though. Just like KISS, they will always have a faithful following.

The problem lies in agents, labels, marketing reps, etc. They want "newer" sounds and updates for the next generation. The problem is, the next generation is too used to "fad" music that is in one day and out the next. This kills what makes bands like Metallica so great. Is Metallica going anywhere anytime soon--I don't think so. Example: Here we have a rock station that, for as long as I can remember, plays a Metallica song at midnight every night and calls it Mandatory Metallica. It is a standard part of their show, and that's right here in the middle of the Mid-west!

Metallica decided to follow music that was more commercial in nature instead of sticking to their tried and true thrash metal of the 80s. On one hand, you have to give them credit. Another Master of Puppets or Ride the Lightning album may not have much relevance to the new generation of youngsters. On the other hand, they really should have stayed away from the grindcore movement as their latest album (St. Anger) has proved. Their movement toward less creative and more commercial music really started with the the hiring of Bob Rock (I believe he once worked with Bon Jovi!) and the release of the Black album. Still, if you listen to Dave Mustaine's new Megadeth album, you will find that trash metal still rocks hard today if performed properly. I still have my Master of Puppets album and when I want to hear Metallica in their prime, I can just give that a spin and think about the good old days when James Hetfield was one of the baddest dudes on the planet!

They have seemingly been ripped apart by inner band fighting. The big two (Hetfield and Ulrich) don't ever seem to have been comfortable with Jason Newstead (now departed bassist). In fact, after losing Cliff Burton, I'm not sure the two of them were ever able to face that fact. They tried to move on through the grief, but couldn't.

From what I've read, Burton was a big musical force behind their earlier albums (Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning and some of ...And Justice For All) but after his influence passed they were left on their own and settled into more of the modern heavy rock (Black album, Load and ReLoad). St. Anger was a disaster. They tried to get back to their roots but the lyrics just didn't seem to fit. They seemed simple and contrived.

Overall, I'd say they lost their big musical influence (Burton), have struggled with inner demons (Hetfield's alcoholism, Newstead's arrival and departure, Ulrich's anti-Napster stance, etc.) and in general trying to recapture the magic that was their first few albums.

Two Words: Bob Rock

Ever since he took over as producer (The Black Album) things have been a slide downhill. Even though Black is their most commercially successful album, it was the beginning of the end and the point where a lot of metal fans lost interest. Supposedly, they're in the studio right now with someone other than Rock. Here's hoping.

Well, simply put, now they're Cashtallica. The garage band that made good has gone bad now, due to all the money involved in their rocket ride to success....10's of millions of fans all over the world, lord only knows how many concerts, but now they're another Big Production, pulling in the residuals, and laughing all the way to the bank....I don't 'dis' on their success, but it's an evolution that's a one-way process...

They walked away from there roots cut there hair Jason left. things change some would say they sold out. They got to big i think maybe it became more of a job of a job to them then something they just lived to do when you love something it shows. that band as been thru hell and there still here to tell so give credit were credit is do we all grow older and slower. we seem to refine our taste so listen to there old music if that's what you like best.
They are all blessed to still be alive.

They sold out a little to make more money, seems like all bands do it at one point or another if they want to survive the changes in the music industry.

Because they lost their heavy metal suave. They are now more GQ than Medal. If they walk into a room, people probably thought they're the band for the Titanic
