What makes people like rap?

LOL - I think the question should be "What makes people like MAINSTREAM rap?" In that case, I have no idea cuz personally I can't stand mainstream rap nowadays. For the most part, all I really listen to now is old-school hip hop (late 80's through mid-90's), underground hip hop and hip hop instrumentals. As for myself, I don't necessarily relate to the kind of story or the kind of life a lot of MC's rap about, but lot of times a good beat is what catches my attention. If I hate the lyrics, I just look for the instrumental. But as for the MC's I do like, most often I like them because of their wordplay, cleverness and delivery. For other people, it might be the catchy hook (aka - chorus) or the heavy bass line, or just the fact that you can dance to it. The point is everybody's reasons for liking it are different.

Interestingly enough, I find that most people who say they don't like rap don't know as much about it as they think they do (i.e. - the difference between an MC and a rapper...and yes, there is a difference). Most of them base their opinions on that rap that the mainstream media force feeds us. I'm hear to tell you that not all rap is about drugs, money, bling, sex and guns, and not all rap is riddled with profanity. There's still some good, quality hip hop out there for those that bother to look for it, but you definitely won't find it in the mainstream.

A lot of rap is about being mad, or about guns n money, the last 2 are a sure-fire crowd-pleaser. The rap artists write stuff that they think will get under your skin, it's not entertainment anymore, it's politics set to a computer drum track...

Well I listen to all kinds except for head banging music, so the reason I like to listen to rap is to get me pumped up for going out I like the beat and the energy.

It's what minorites can relate to and one of the things that can not be taken away from us. You would never understand hip hop because you are not open minded enough sorry. Why do people like country, rock,tecno? I don't understand why but I don't bash peoples styles.

its bout life and struggling to get to the top when u wear on da streets hustlin or on ur grind but see its also bout hatred towards ppl for not helping and cops arresting them for surviving and its not from brain damage or n e thing like that its bout how u grew up i did the same they did its bout survival
