Because no REAL phone numbers exist with those numbers. Otherwise fools would be ringing them all the time.

Ever wonder why phone numbers in TV shows and movies always start with a 555 prefix? Well, producers discovered that if they used a real phone number, thousands of curious viewers would dial the number.. So the phone company established the nonexistent 555 exchange. The general 555 prefix is an established feature used in movies and television shows. It was designed to prevents people from receiving crank calls when a phone was mentioned on a TV show or movie. Fictitious numbers for Movies and TV use 555-0100 to 555-0199. You will also note that there are some numbers using prefixes such as GRAMARCY, PLAZA or KLONDIKE which do not conform to the 555 Prefix configuration. These prefixes reflect the exchanges-many from the 1950s-used before the common 555 prefixes were established.

they have 555 in the begining of the number because no one elses phone number starts with 555 and they are not allowed to use a number that a real person might have in case someone who was watching the movie or tv show might call the number

The phone companies do not have any real numbers designated to people or businesses that begin with 555, so the movie and entertainment industry actually began using the prefix way back in the 40s, I think. It is now a prefix used exclusively for the purpose of entertainment (otherwise people who have that prefix would be bombarded with calls once someone heard the number said, just to see who would answer).

Could you imagine the poor shmuck who has the same phone number as the character/place in the film? He would be gettin called all day and night. There was a song in the eighties "8675309" that was about a woman and that was her number. So, of course, people called it. Turns out it was a real number and that person still gets calls. 555 was set aside and is not used for public or private use. hence all movie numbers are 555!

Because it's a fake number. There is no phone number starting with 555, that way people don't get harrassed all the time by the stupid people that watch movies and try to call the numbers they see in them.

Beacuse there are no real phone numbers with that pre-fix. They started doing that in the 50's or early 60's. They would use a real phone number and the person who had that number would get flooded with calls... If you check, in the US, there are no real phone numbers with the prefix 555.

Believe it or not there are losers with nothing to do all day but call numbers they see on TV.
Once in a great while a number slips through and some poor schmuck in Muncie, Indiana's phone starts ringing off the hook, nothing but tards on the other end, looking for Heathclifee Huxtable or someone equally ficticious and annoying.

Because people were calling the numbers given in movies to see if they were real. The numbers that used to be given were real numbers for real people, not the actors in the movie/television. Now, 555 is given as the prefix because it is not a real prefix for any state.

You don't expect them to give real phone numbers do you? 555 is a phone exchange.

That is the only exchange that doesn't exist in real life. If a tv character's number started with 863, 663, etc, people would actually try to call those numbers, and bother real people. Yes, there really are people who are stupid enough to try to call tv and movie characters.
