I recently planted grass after sowing our lawn. Now there are weeds popping up all around. I cannot pull them because then i would have to walk into the new grassy areas. I do not want to hurt the new grass coming up. My neighbor says it is stupid to pull the weeds, because he says the grass will eventually kill the weeds by growing up around them. What do you say?

Depends on what kind of grass you planted and the frequency of watering. Bermuda and St. Augustine are the best for "choking" out weeds. Be patient, let your lawn get established and then treat your weeds with a selective herbicide.

The grass may eventually choke out the weeds but if that occurs the grass was probably planted too thick and should be thinned. Your best bet is to keep the lawn mowed at the highest setting. This will give your grass the best chance for survival. Most weeds don't like to be mowed and will eventually die. The only real way to get rid of these weeds is to use selective herbicide and/or pull them by hand.

Next time you plant grass seed make sure the area is sterile (no weeds to begin with) and use a good quality seed that is free of noxious weeds.

If you want to really choke out weeds plant a thick turf grass like Bermuda or zoysia (sunny areas only). Either one of these will take over the yard. Just make sure your neighbor is ok with it because it will eventually take of his/her yard too.

Weeds kill grass not the other way around. You should kill the weeds before you plant the grass. Wait untill the new grass has been mowed about three times then treat with mild applications of weed killer

NO! Grass WILL NOT kill weeds. If Bermuda killed weeds people wouldn't be buying crabgrass preventer all the time. Image is a weed killer that can be sprayed on ALL warm season grasses and will not hurt it. It can also be sprayed on over 200 ornamental flowers and shrubs without hurting it.

For the record......walking on your grass will not hurt it. You might want to put a bag of Lawn Starter Fertilizer down on the new grass to promote healthy growth. It will not hurt the grass. It is high in phosphurus....which will strengthen the roots.

I am a grass seed salesman :)

A healthy lawn will prevent weeds from growing. Hang in there for awhile, if you don't think you can walk on the grass. It will get better.

Grass does not kill weeds.
Go to wal-mart and ask you garden personal what you should use. I saw something there a few weeks ago that kills weeds not grass.
