Do swimming turtles box?

2006-06-30 08:31:20 · answer #1 · answered by bbcranks 4 · 0 0

NO WAY! The can easily drown. They do not swim in the wild. They may enter shallow water, but never deep enough for them to swim. They are a land based turtle, sometimes classified as semi-aquatic, but that is a vague and general categorization.

They spend all their days on land and only require a water dish or pan to soak in. Provide them lots of insects, worms and over-ripe fruit. They will also take pellets, which will many of their nutritional needs. Do dust the insects and worms and food with a reptile powder (mineral & vitamins).

Here is a caresheet for a typical American box turtle:

N.B. The Malaysian box turtle, Cuora aboinensis, is the most aquatic Asian box turtle, which is not related to the coomon North American boxie (Terrapene spp.)

Yes they are technically a semi-aquatic turtle. They tend to swim more often when young, because there is more meat to eat by the water. When their young they eat a lot of meat, and as they get older they move away from the water because they eat more plant matter.

Box turtles do not swim and will drown. They do like to bathe, a shallow pie pan works well.

Most do not swim real well, but some species are almost aquatic!

Boxies should have a pool or pond that is easy to get into and out of. They generally should not be left near a bigger pool or deep water.

Yes they do swim....some of them actually like it. They swim very poorly so they do need to be watched to prevent drowning.

I have a box turtle, and you need do need to let them swim to rehydrate them. Just not very much.

Hope this helps!!

They can swim very poorly. They are not aquatic. They do not need to be kept in water and will drown as they cannot surface like an aquatic terrapin. They are terrestrial.
