Heavy firing at Indo-Bangla border
Kolkata, July 6: BORDER troops of India and Bangladesh today exchanged heavy firing near Taki, under Hasnabad police station area of North 24 Parganas, about 100 km from Kolkata.
The firing, which started at around 5.15 am over the Ichamati river, was sparked after cattle smugglers from Bangladesh were spotted and chased by the BSF. The incident took place betwween Sodepur border outpost, Hasnabad (India) and Vattola, Satkhira (Bangaldesh).
‘‘The BDR fired upon our jawans when they were chasing the cattle smugglers, who swam towards the Bangladesh border. We returned the fire. However, later they again initiated unprovoked firing on our troops. We have positioned an extra two companies of our troops in the area and are prepared for anything,’’ said Ramesh Chandra Saxena, DIG, Pincipal Staff Officer, BSF.
According to the BSF, a group of cattle smugglers of Bangladeshi origin were trying to drive away cattle from India to Bangladesh through the border. The BSF patrol boat intercepted and challenged them. The smugglers left the cattle and jumped into the river, swimming towards the Bangldesh border.
The BSF patrol chased them. As the smugglers neared the Bangladesh territory, BDR personnel fired on their Indian counterparts. The BSF personnel retaliated. Two smugglers were injured, and took shelter on the Bangladeshi side.
Later, at around 9:20 am, the BDR allegedly started ‘‘unprovoked firing’’ on Indian positions. The BSF returned the fire. ‘‘It was the BDR who initiated offensive and fired around 9,000 rounds. We retaliated and fired 500-600 rounds,’’ said a BSF commandant posted in the area.
Later, the BSF contacted one BDR major and asked him to stop the firing. The firing then stopped at around 11:30 am. The BSF lodged a strong protest at a flag meeting held later with the BDR.
However, the incident has left the area tense. The BSF personnel are on alert.
