IT shows all the ALT key symbols. You need to make sure your numlock is on when you use the ALT key and the numeric pad to make these symbols.

For Mac: I don't know.
For Windows: Click on Start Menu. Go to Accessories. Open up System Tools. Then find "Character Map". Click on Character Map. At the bottom right is the keyboard shortcuts to make the character appear. The bottom left tells you another code, but I haven't any idea on how to make it work. You can however, just double click to copy that special character to clipboard, and use + "V " to paste.

How did you do that? Actually, I have a cool tip that only old folks like me know.
Hold down the ALT key and type in a 3 digit number on the 10 key pad, (with numlock on) then release the ALT key.
This is 130: é
131: â
132: ä
133: Ã
134: å
135: ç
136: ê
and so on up to 254, then you get into unprintable characters, like line feeds, etc..

If you are going to use them in a special language (Ex. French) you should go to your Control Panel - Regional and Language Settings and in the Languages tab select the Details option. Select the language you would like to use in Keyboard, after that you only have to press ALT (right only) and press your preferred letter.

the quickest way is the combination of:
alt+0235 = ë
For the other, the character map is your friend. You really just need to copy/paste it where you want it.
