My wife bought a PS2 at a garage sale - turns out it did not have the video cable with it - we tried the one from my PS1. Video and a menu comes up on the TV screen, but can't seem to get a game (PS1 or PS2) to run. We're completely new to this and don't have a manual for it. My wife says she found out a PS1 video cable won't work on a PS2 - could that be the problem?

I've plugged in my PS1 using the same cables as the PS2, and it seemed to work perfectly, but I'm not sure the reverse would be true. Regardless, if you're seeing the system menu then the cord isn't the problem.

Try using a CD lens cleaner (you can buy them at almost any store that sells electronics) and make sure the disc(s) you put in are clean. If that doesn't work, any number of things could be wrong with the unit.

It may be that your wife bought a PS2 with a broken lens gear (this was the reason for the slim remake). one way to check it is to put a dvd movie and then a music cd in it. If only one of them plays then the gear is your issue. PS2 games that have a blue disc are cd based games if it has the silver disc it is a dvd based game. Also when you put the disc in watch the orbs that circle around if they turn into 3 solid orbs circleing then you have an issue and it can't read the disc (this is usually a disc issue). If they seperate in to i think it is 9 orbs then it's trying to read and it may be the lens gear(cheaper to buy a new one than get it fixed)
The cables don't matter they are exactly the same (sony keeping the system cost effective)

PS2 and PS1 cables are the same. You might want to press triangle on the main menu, pres triangle again, press x, then turn diagnosis on. If that doesn't work, your DVD drive isn't good.
