Pysch class says it is a state of mind but I am unsure of that. In your experience, what is the whole deal on poularity and losers and band geeks and such? My school seems to have it all but at the same time it seems the cliques aren't there. Any answers?

The fact of the matter is, popularity is a state of mind that transcends into reality. We thought it was there, so it was there. it's as simple as that. If almost everyone thinks one girl is popular, wouldn't that make her popular? It certainly did in high school.

The reason it sometimes seems as if there are no cliques is because the cliques are well-defined. There are general groups - general levels - but those levels interact. There are popular people on each social level...the geek with the most friends to the cheerleader with the most friends. Still, the fact that some people are invited to all the parties is undeniable. There will always be a group of people who have the most friends, the most followers, and the most enemies. That's popularity.

theres always going to be people who have similar taste and those people tend to group together. in the social microcosm that is high school becasue we are taught as children to classify and catergorize for ease of comprehension w carry that with us through to high school and sometimes through our life, but becasue of that classificaiton theory we have the development of cliques. a truly mature person understands that we are all the same and that our differences are the things that help us share a bond. popularity in the real world is something that can be developed through an understnading of how to people please. saying the right thing at the right time, and understanding that moeny talks, that people are more likely to listen to you if they can make moeny off you, sad reality that we live in. but then again those who have shed the childhood mentality of classificaiton will find that everyone is the same and abandon the idea of popularity.

but then again theres going to be people who just dont like being social and more than likely they wont be known by the world, but they are happier that way

It's a complete state of mind...people are only popular because you make them popular by giving them status in your mind. People are only losers or band geeks because they are given labels...after highschool that all fades away and people are on thier own..Life is so much differnt once your out and you realize that all the things you once believed are no longer true..and some of the nerds and people you may not have liked are cool, fun people.I don't really define people as un cool or cool...I just judge them on first impressions and how they act as people.

I am in high school and its just a state of mind. my school has about 2,700 kids so no one is actually popular because theirs to many of us. But all in all EVERYONE is known for something, its not a popular group and everyone else is a no body. its been like that in all the schools ive gone to. If your a nerd then hey your cool with everyone because your smart and we need you. If your in the football team then your known for the skills. if your in the choir then your known as "that good singer" cheerleaders arent really considered in my school because we have a lop sided 84% girls ( all girl school before ). but theres no such thing as a popular group we are all known for something

We had cliques, but they weren't as vicious as movies portray. Actually any of the "popular" girls were really nice one or two at a time. It was when the whole group of them got together that they were snotty.

My brother was a band geek. Still is. But, he's happy, so whatever works.

popularity was just a state of mind. Im going to be a junior and I know im not going to be well known again. I wear the simplest clothing and do well in my class and not get caught up in fads and trends. My answer to this is to just be yourself, dont bother the popular kids and live everyday like its your last. I was like that and I am now succeeding in AP classes. well not exactly but I did pass all of my regents.

defintely state of mind. when you grow up and are in the real world all of that popularity, cliques, etc. turns out to be so meaningless. the ceo of that company could care less if you were a cheerleader who won Prom Queen.

Popularity does have to do with a state of mind--human beings do make judgments based on their mental perception--but the foundations of it stem from practicalities. Who are the easiest people to hang around? Who are the easiest people to look up to? Who walks around demanding to be treated certain ways? We use those types of things to form our perceptions of other people. So I think it's a bit of both. That's why popularity changes as you get older--the practicalities used to form perception change with environment change.

popularity is not a state of mind. I think is all has to do with the way you carry yourself. if you look back on those days you will notice that the people who were "not cool" are the people who didnt hold there head up or have the courage to actually talk or interact with people. it all has to do with the way people preceve themselves if you dont have confidence in yourself others will not have confidence in you. "thus, you are unpopular"
