Why is the heart regarded as the symbol of love when psysiologically it has nothing to do with it? I mean isn't love and attraction and desire actually related to the brain and our hormones?

It's an ancient belief.

Consider the following.

What do you feel physiologically when you're attracted to someone?

You don't feel hormones being produced.

You don't feel the neurotransmitters sending signals back and forth.

You do feel an increase in your heart rate, and you feel your heart pounding in your chest.

Because "heart" is a symbol. And in this case, other than biologically, a darn good one.

The heart has long been known to be a very basic need for life. Stop heart, person dies.

Therefore as a symbol for love, it's perfect. For love is at the HEART of life in the spiritual, emotional and psychological sense.
Without love, person dies in the soul.

When you see someone who just gets your fancy, what or should I say how does your heart feel. It should be beating, possibly a little faster than normal.

A lot of cultures and religions even, believed that the heart was the center of all emotions. I'm speaking back before modern science told you otherwise. The giving of your heart to someone meant that she/he was the most important thing to you. It was seen as a symbol of undying love and a willingness to share your soul w/ them.

This just seemed to carry over into our current times and became a cultural icon of love.

Yes it is, but a long time ago, people thought that your heart literally was the source of your love. Now, everyone is so accustomed to associating the heart with love, that it has become tradition, and tradition is usually stronger than people's view of science. I don't know about the heart shape, though; that doesn't look anything like a heart!

In ancient times it was believed that the various organs controlled different emotions. So we still say "heart full of love" but we also say "he vented his spleen" (because the spleen was believed to be the source of anger" or "He didn't have the stomach for it" (because the stomach or gut was considered to be the source of courage).

We know differently now, but the figures of speech are still with us.

I think its because the heart is what people associate with the key part of your body that is keeping you alive, so naturally that is what would be associated with love, the key emotion that keeps us going. Not sure where it originated, though?
