as with many specie of fish, the Gourami is territorial. your tank naturally divides itself into territories based on what you have in your tank. Certain decorations or plant or whatever will break up the whole tank into those regions controlled by one fish or a pair if they are mates. If you are adding fish to an existing tank and are concerned with over aggression, you can rearrange the tank so that everybody has a fair chance to establish themselves into the newly formed territories. If the gourami is just chasing other fish from its territory it is of little concern. If it were carrying on the chase and doing harm to the other fish, then it is time to find a new fish.

Gouramis are known to be very agressive and territorial. One thing you can do to confuse him for a little while is move some of the decor around, and add some new ones. Eventually though he'll claim another part of the tank, until you change things again.

Gourami's are a territorial fish.
The golden version is man-made and one of the problems that some exhibit is aggression. Add more tall plants and possibly introduce 2 females to it (it sounds like a male) then it may well calm down.

What other kind of fish are in there? It really isn't wise to mix gouramis with smaller fish.. You should try to have them in with fish of their own sizes.

She might also be preparing to lay eggs. As such, she doesn't want anyone around to eat them.

When was the last time you checked your water parameters? Gouramis tend to get a little more aggressive when the water isn't to their liking...

I have not had this happen, but I have an idea. Possibly, you have smaller fish, and your gold gourami is being aggressive towards them, and that part of the tank is its territory. Supposedly they are only aggressive to other gouramis, but if you have smaller fish, it could be territoral towards them.
