My girlfriend has always been active, but she recently informed me that after seeing some pictures in a magazine and some comments some people at her gym have made that would like to train for a bodybuilding competition with the idea of pursuing it professionally some time in the future.

I want to be supportive of her and her goals, but I also don't like this look on woman. How should I handle this?

She "informed" you. It's her body. You don't get a vote!

This is a non-issue. Only people who take steroids heavily can in any way compete in body building. The amount needed for professional body building will quickly destroy your health.

Either your girlfriend is willing to do this or she is not. If she is, you should leave her because it basically means she is a ******* retard. Since this is unlikely, you should simply encourage her. After a few years of few results except a very trim body you will enjoy *******, quite a bit, she will give up.

Without steroids, she will NEVER develop the type of body you are worried about. It's simply impossible. She can however, develop an extremely attractive, athletic look to her. Her muscles won't grow but her body will become quite toned.

You tell her just that. If she hasn't "bulked up" yet, you're not insulting her - yet. And it's simply a matter of stating your taste. While you're highly attracted to her now, that look is an acquired taste and to you, personally, a complete turnoff. Question number two is -- if she proceeds -- can you get past it. Because, after all, it is her body to do with as she pleases. That's when you have to look at the relationship issues and decide what's important to you.

And you're right -- personally, I hate the look of male bodybuilders with bursting muscles, but it looks even worse (and even more unnatural) on women.

Find a new girlfriend. You are not going to be supportive of her, know matter how much you want to be. She is pursueing something that is very important to her, and you can't hold her back. If you do anything that holds her back, she will at some point resent you, and your relationship will fall apart in the long run. Just explain to her that you are moving on because you don't want to hold her back from her ambitions. She will appreciate you more for your honesty.

I think it is her body and her life. Do you actually expect her to give something that she is passionate about for a boyfriend? What if she does give it up for you? Has it not occurred to you that she will resent you for trying to control her destiny? You are supposed to love the person, not their body. Plus, what if she decides in 6 months that she doesn't really like body building, and quits. You will have placed a wedge between one-another for nothing.

I think the "buff" looking gals i.e. Ms. Olympia in the magazines are usually the result of massive weight training and steroids. Too extreme for my likes, usually. The "athletic/fit" looking gals .i.e. Ms. Fitness, are still feminine and hot.

Any clue as to how difficult it is for women to "bulk" up? Give her some elbow room, and let it run its course. Bet it comes out fine, and you'll show that you can handle issues in a mature fashion.

You've got to tell her the truth. It's good of you to want to be supportive, but you owe it to yourself and to your girlfriend to be honest about the consequences of this course of action.

PS - I don't blame you, honey. It's great to be fit and healthy, but it's not great to go overboard either. It's really not attractive.
