I would not say crappy team, but waaaay overhyped yes. Argentina proved that a strong team can stop the German's attacks before they get anywhere, and their defense is not that good, even though they do have a great goalie.
I think Argentina lost because of two things: The injured goalie, I'm totally sure he wouldn't take Klose's goal since he would have jumped and taken the ball before him. The pass was slow and too near the goalie. Then the stupid coach made his last substitution... he should know he should have waited.
Now did Argentina outplayed Germany? I think they did, and superbly. They were marking the germans very very well, like they always do (probably because they are used to play Brazil, so the germans must be alot easier for them).
You can't say the referee helped Germany, the most controversial decision was not to book the guy that hurt the goalie , but that wasn't a fault easy to see. Germany got very lucky Argentina's coach was stupid, and wanted to win 1-0 instead of keeping the pressure. This wasn't the first or last time a team trying to keep the result takes a goal and get screwed. I feel kinda sad for the argentinians because they deserved the win more than Germany.
BatiGoal, very good points there, now that you mention it it really seemed like the germans had the simpathy of the referee when winning.

Dude, you walked into this one. "How can a team as crappy as Germany beat Argentina, who played circles around them?"
Instead of playing in circles, you guys should have gone straight for the goal!
If a crappy team beats you, what does that make you? Just like Triniwarrior24 said before me, if you lose to a crappy team, who's the crappy team then?

Germany isn't crappy. In the beginning, Argentina was the better team. They put in a nice goal and were holding the ball a lot more than Germany. Its Argentina's coach's fault they didn't win. He made the mistake to take out Crespo and Riquelme, and then didn't put in Saviola or Messi. Of course, Franco the replacement goalie wasn't very lucky during the penalties-he didn't block any. Well, its over now. Lets go see what will happen with Italy-Ukraine!

Germany won because:
1. They were at home
2. The referee was biased/bought/whatever
3. The Germans took out the only Argentine goalie that could have been a threat (and didn't get called for it, of course), and to make things worse we had to use one of our substitutions for this
4. Ayala and Cambiasso suck at penalty kicks
5. The crazy formation. Crespo was all by himself (and then Cruz) up front, and Tevez had to go back to midfield.
6. Pekerman screwed up the substitutions
7. FIFA is corrupt; when given the choice, they'll pick the European country over the third-world, non-Brazilian South American country
At least we made the the Germans fight for it. None of the others gave them a hard time like Argentina, and if Abbondanzieri had been in the goal, Argentina would have won 1-0.

Argentina had a better game than Germany. Unfortunately, Argentina's goal keeper was injured, he is the best goal keeper on this World Cup. But the referees in all the games that I saw suck, look what happened with Australia vs Italy. Everything is arranged, and it's no surprise that Germany "won" today being the host. But it was Argentina's game, at least they had a clean game unlike the Germans that since the beginning started playing rough and dirty.... minute 3 one of them got a yellow card. Anyways, Germany will lose eventually.

I, an Argentina fan, think they were out-coached. Germany's subs were intelligent subs; Odonkur to create chances, taking Schweinsteiger, and getting in a fresh Neuville for a tired Klose in a game that seemed likely to go to extra time. Meanwhile, Argentina after having the unfortune sub for Abbondanzieri, took off arguably their two best offensive players for more defensive players, which makes sense, except if Germany was to score (which soon happened), they wouldnt have their offensive firepower. That happened, and, quite frankly, Argentina got screwed. A good win for Germany, and an unlucky loss for Argentina. When a game goes to penalties, the result usually doesnt reflect how the match went. Such was the case today.

instead of giving retarded answeres like most of the ones i have read in this question, i will try to atleast analyze it a bit. Argentina like the question suggests played better than Germany. Mascherano with the help of Gonzalez kept Ballack at bay, and didnt allow any of the middle range shots that Germany is famous for. It wasn't that Germany played badly like some of the other responses suggest, it was that the Germans were shut down completely by their first good opponent in the tournament(any of you who claim sweeden, ecuador, poland, or Costa Rica are world powers need to get your brains checked). Argentina was their first real challange, and they were not up to it. In the first half, Argentina had possession 72% of the time (look up the stat yourself if you don't beleive me). Germany's long balls down the wings which had worked flawlessly for them so far in the tournament was taken away cleanly everytime by the argentine defence. In the second half, much of this changed due in large part to one man. Unfortunately he wasn't from Germany he was from Slovakia. The referee had the most questionable run i have ever seen of any referee in any world cup. Every Argentine fast break was called to a stop by phantom calls. He single handedly shut down the argentine attack. On the other side of the feild, balls the Argentines had been winning completely cleanly in the first half, were accompanied by German dives, which the referee called every single time allowing the German attack to build up. The goal came on one such situation. After the Germans scored, The referee all of a sudden started calling the fouls normally again (quite suspicious behavior, maybe the host country had been filling his pockets?) at this point, Argentina again began to dominate. The german goal was under constant pressure, and germany did all it could to dig in and play for penalties. This was indeed a good strategy however since Abondonzerie, the argentine penalty specialist goalie had been injured in the second half, during a blatant german foul that wasn't called and wich nearly resulted in a german goal. Had abondonzerie still been in the net, the result may have been very different. His substitute Leo Franco wasn't even close to stopping a single one of the penalties. These factors all led to the worse team of the match coming out as victors 4-2 in penalties.

Crappy subsitutes and lack of luck on the part of Argentina. Bothe teams played well but Argentina was running circles around germany but poor subsitution and just plain bad luck led to bye bye.

This game was great.. strong on both ends, a bit slower to wake up for Germany, but the SHOOT OUT was amazing...
When the teams are tied at the end of the two 15 minute overtimes, they then do the 'shoot out' NOT PENALTY POINTS..sheesh! and if they are still tied after each team shoots five times, they keep going and going with five shots each until there is a winner..... THESE ARE NOT CALLED PENALTY POINTS. I know it is hard to comprehend, but it is just the way it is.. so suck it up, move on!!
and i do not believe they played circles around them and you do not get goals for making circles.. and for Germany to be 'crappy' boy... I bet they feel really 'crappy' now!!

All came down to the better goalie! What a pair of hands that German has on him. WOWEE!!
It is very unfortunate that it must come to a penalty kicks. I think they should play until one team scores the winning goal - no matter how long overtime needs to go. It is not a true reflection of the winning team when they win in a shoot out.
Noticed the camera searching for Maradona throughout the game. Did you see him? I never did! Oh well, there is always 2010!
Hey, I am Scottish/Canadian, my team did not even make it to Germany. Don't feel so bad now!
