I've wondered that. It's quite possible that nothing will happen. There were no cataclysmic events 25,994 years ago, after all.
Still, it's interesting to contemplate. The end of the world was never predicted...it was the 'end of the world as we know it.' That could mean anything at all - Apocalypse, space invasion, world peace - anything.

This bit is just to clear up some confusion among other answerer's.
The significance of 2012 is that that is the last year recorded in the Mayan calender. It's not just some random year. In fact, it was narrowed down to December of that year. The reason it's taken seriously is because the Mayan calender has been surprisingly accurate, so people believe that they might have known about certain events - like the end of the world.
Personally, I think it's just another Apocalypse theory.

The astronomical alignment of December 21, 2012 is a once in 26,000 year event. A full cycle of precession takes that long. Symbolically it's the sun being reborn and the birth of a new world age.
As to what exactly will HAPPEN, we simply don't know.
Read "Maya Cosmogenesis 2012" by John Major Jenkins for a lot more on this subject. Read my 2012 article on my Jaguar Nights blog or my regular website for other information on that day.

I sure hope the world ends in 2012 with fire and brimstone and the 4 horsemen and sh*t. That would be cool as fu*k! I'd video the whole thing and sell it to cnn.

I don't think I can do it justice, but it has something to do with the gravitation pull of the earth, and the possibility of our poles shifting in position.
Would be cataclysmic should it happen.
