Three. The Adder, the Grass snake and the Smooth snake.
This is the only true snakes because the Slow worm (which is sometimes mistaken for a snake) is actually a legless lizard.

there are 3 snakes native to Britain, Adders are the only venomous ones, they have a coloured triangle pattern on their markings. you then have the smooth snake, don't know much about them, and final the Grass Snake, which is the largest females grow up to 3' they are often seen in ponds as they feed on frogs, and amphibians, and have a distinctive yellow band around the base of the head, where it joins the body. They also coil up and leave their mouth open, pretending to be dead, if they feel threatened, I can send you a photo of a grass snake that was in my pond on Saturday, eating my frogs, if you know how I can protect the frogs I'd appreciate it.

The slow-worm is somewhat enigmatic. Although it is a true lizard, the slow-worm has no legs and is commonly mistaken for a snake. This species is very secretive and is not often seen. saying that i did find 1 the outher day. :)
